Swingin’ at The Kiggins

Almost every day in the shop I get asked “Where can I go all dressed up in Vintage” or “Where can I go locally to dance and listen to live music?” We created an event to give an answer to these questions…..

I had recently helped as a stylist for a marketing shoot. Garret Olmstead, co-owner of Locksmyth Salon with his wife Becca, has been creating and perfecting a pomade for mens hair, mustache and beard. The shoot was to promote his new product, Bru Pomade Dapper Man. As we worked together we developed a great fashion relationship especially when it comes to vintage. Garret specializes in classic mens cuts and shaves. His work is incredible. This day turned into a ongoing conversation to pull local creatives together to plan an event showcasing vintage fashion from head to toe, music and dance. An event that will give local people of all ages a time to celebrate classic entertainment.

Most Everything Vintage shoot at The Kiggins Theatre

Garret and I teamed up with Dan at The Kiggins Theatre along with Sammuel Murry-Hawkins,conductor for the Ne Plus Ultra Jass Orchestra, Christi Clay from local group The Juleps and Zef Aidan Wolf, local classic dance instructor.
The 12-piece orchestra features music from 1918-1939 so we needed to find a decade where all of us crossed paths and chose the 30’s. With a little research Richard, program director at The Kiggins, gave us an incredible list of movies to choose from. Our pick…. 1938 College Swing featuring George Burns, Gracie Allen, Martha Raye and Bob Hope. A fun ol’ Black and White comedy full of head to toe fashion, live music and dance. Plus, The Kiggins opened in 1936 so felt this movie would be perfect.
